The manuscript collection consists of around 35,000 items. It not only contains manuscripts written in Goethe’s own hand and in the hands of those in his close circle, but also handwritten documents of all of his most important contemporaries, of the Romantics, and of Beethoven, for example.

CATALOGUES

The manuscript holdings of the Düsseldorf Goethe Museum are listed in a card index. For the purposes of research, the printed catalogue of the Kippenberg Collection in its second edition (Leipzig 1928; first edition Leipzig 1913) is indispensable.

A large number of the Goethe Museum’s manuscripts have been input into the Union Catalogue for personal papers and manuscripts Kalliope (DE-Due63).
